How to make a cup of tea

There are a number of things that can go wrong, or right, in making a cup of tea...

You think you know a person. And then they make you a cup of tea...

Last week, Lou's good friend made her a tea.

She poured the milk right on top of the teabag.

Before the hot water.

Not OK.

The milk and the teabag are not to touch.

There are a number of things that can go wrong, or right, in making tea.

These are the main things - they could save friendships.

HOW TO MAKE A CUP OF TEA

SHORT STORY >

1 teabag per cup

Fresh water into kettle (re-boiling not good)

Pour as soon as it boils (hotter the better for black tea)

Wait 3 mins (it’s not that long)

Teabag out

Milk at the end

The milk and the teabag are not to touch.

LONG STORY >

Fresh water
Tea likes oxygen.
It helps release the flavour.
When you keep boiling water, you keep removing the oxygen.

Hot, very hot
Black tea (everyday tea, english breakfast etc) has been fermented.
This is what has turned it from a fresh green leaf to black tea.
It has also made it strong.
And richer in flavour.
It will take some very hot water to release that flavour.
So boil it and pour straight away.
The tea can handle it.

Brew time
3 minutes is what the tea tasters say.
It's not that long.

Milk last
Give the tea the hottest water and it will give you the most flavour.
Adding milk to your water makes it less hot.
So you will get less flavour.
Let it do its thing.
Then give it some milk.

There are some things that are up for debate.

Like squeezing
Of teabags.
Technically, you shouldn't do it.
They say it makes tea bitter - releases excess tannins.
But it feels good doesn't it?
Like you're getting all the tea out.

So enjoy.

We will leave it there.
And brace ourselves for any fallout.
